40ft Containers
Twice the length of a 20ft and considerably less than twice the price per cubic foot, provided your access can take the truck.
A 40ft holds around 2,390 cubic feet, or about 2,690 in high cube form. Per cubic foot stored it is the cheapest box we sell, which is why they end up in yards, on farms and behind warehouses wherever there is room to land one.
Room is the catch. A 40ft normally arrives on a tilt-bed and needs 80 feet of straight-line approach to slide off, a route at least 14 feet wide and 15 feet of overhead clearance.

Standard or high cube
Standard gives 7ft 10in of internal headroom. High cube gives 8ft 10in. That extra foot is what lets you stand pallets two high with clearance, or fit a mezzanine. High cubes cost a little more and are worth it far more often than not.
Two 20s or one 40
One 40ft is cheaper to buy than two 20s and gives slightly more volume. Two 20s are easier to deliver, easier to move later, and can go in two places. If your access is awkward, the delivery saving can wipe out the difference in the purchase price.
Ground
A 40ft loaded is a serious weight on four corners. Firm, level bearing points matter more here than on a 20ft. Soft ground under one corner will rack the frame over a winter and the doors will tell you about it.
