Standard Shipping Containers

The 8ft 6in ISO box that everything else is measured against, with 7ft 10in of internal height.

A standard container is 8ft 6in tall externally and 7ft 10in inside. It is the shape the shipping industry standardised on, and it is what most people picture when they say container.

For plain storage it is usually the right choice. You only need a high cube when something has to stand up inside, or when a floor and ceiling are going in.

Specification

A 20ft standard gives about 1,170 cubic feet, a 40ft about 2,390. Internal width is 7ft 8in on both. Door apertures are 7ft 8in wide by 7ft 6in high. Tare weight is about 4,850 lb (2,200 kg) for a 20ft and 8,160 lb (3,700 kg) for a 40ft.

Grading

Cargo-worthy units hold a valid CSC plate and can still be shipped. Wind and watertight units are sound against weather but are sold for static use. Both are structurally sound; the difference is certification and cosmetic condition.
