Carbon Steel Container
Containers in weathering steel, the corrosion-resistant alloy that shipping containers have been built from for decades.
Shipping containers are built from weathering steel, often called by the trade name Corten. It forms a stable oxide layer that slows further corrosion rather than flaking away like ordinary mild steel rust.
That is why a forty-year-old container is still standing while a mild steel shed of the same age has gone. It is also why surface rust on a used container is usually cosmetic rather than structural.

What this means when buying used
Judge a used container by the floor, the door seals and the roof, not by the paint. Patches of surface oxide on the side panels are normal and rarely affect life expectancy. Soft spots in the plywood floor and daylight at the roof seams are the things worth walking away from.
Painting
Weathering steel takes paint well once it has been wire-brushed back to a sound surface. Most of our conversions are repainted to order, and color is rarely a cost driver.
