20ft Containers

The size most buyers settle on. Around 1,170 cubic feet, and it needs 60 feet of clear run to place.

A 20ft container is the default for good reason. It holds roughly 1,170 cubic feet, weighs about 4,850 lb (2,200 kg) empty, and fits down the side of most yards without special access arrangements. It is also the size we hold most of.

Inside you get 19ft 4in of length, 7ft 8in across and 7ft 10in of headroom. The door aperture is 7ft 8in wide by 7ft 5in high, which is the measurement that matters if a pallet truck is going in.

Which condition to buy

One-trip units have carried a single load from the factory. The paint is unmarked, the floor is clean and the doors seal properly. Used stock is graded: cargo-worthy carries a valid CSC plate and can still be shipped, wind and watertight is sound for storage but would not pass a survey.

If the container is going to sit in a compound for a decade, wind and watertight does the same job for less. If it is going on a ship, or somewhere customers will see it, pay for cargo-worthy or one-trip.

Groundwork and delivery

Four points take the weight, one at each corner casting. Concrete pads or sleepers are enough. What matters is that they are level, because a container that sits twisted will not close cleanly.

Leave 60 feet of straight approach, 14 feet of width and 15 feet of overhead clearance for the crane arm. If you are unsure, send us a photograph of the access with your enquiry.
