Open Top containers

Standard containers with a removable tarpaulin roof, so a crane can load from above rather than through the doors.

An open top swaps the steel roof for a bow frame and a tarpaulin. The end door still opens normally, and the top comes off, so awkward loads can be craned in rather than dragged through a 7ft 5in door aperture.

Machinery, timber, glass and anything tall enough to foul the door header are the usual reasons people want one.

Weatherproofing

A tarpaulin in good condition keeps rain out. One that has been folded wet, patched, or left in the sun for five years will not. Inspect the sheet and the lashing eyes, and budget for a replacement cover if the unit is going to store anything that matters.

The door header

Some open tops have a removable door header as well as the roof, which lets a forklift drive straight in with a tall load. That detail is worth confirming on the individual unit, because it changes what you can get through the end.
