A foot more internal height than a standard 40ft, and about 13 per cent more volume.
A 40ft high cube is 9ft 6in tall externally against 8ft 6in for a standard 40ft. Inside, that becomes 8ft 10in of clear height instead of 7ft 10in. Length, width and the corner castings are identical, so it handles, stacks and delivers exactly like a standard container.
That extra foot is worth more than it sounds. It is the difference between stacking pallets two high with room to work and stacking them two high with the top one scraping the roof. Once a floor and a lined ceiling go into a conversion, a standard 40ft loses about four inches and starts to feel low. A high cube does not.
Racking. Mezzanines. Anything on wheels that has to be driven in. Every conversion where people will be standing up all day. Machinery that is fine on its side in transit but has to stand upright in storage.
A little more to buy, and a foot more overhead clearance on delivery. Check gateways, branches and cables over the approach before ordering — the truck needs the room as much as the container does.
These are the ISO 668 figures for the size, which is why any container of this length stacks and locks with any other. Individual units vary in weight and finish.
| Measurement | Imperial | Metric |
|---|---|---|
| External | 40 ft 0 in × 8 ft 0 in × 9 ft 6 in | 12,192 × 2,438 × 2,896 mm |
| Internal | 39 ft 5 in × 7 ft 8 in × 8 ft 10 in | 12,032 × 2,350 × 2,698 mm |
| Door opening | 7 ft 8 in × 8 ft 6 in | 2,342 × 2,585 mm |
| Internal volume | 2,694 cu ft | 76.3 m³ |

Externally 40 ft × 8 ft × 9 ft 6 in (12,192 × 2,438 × 2,896 mm). Internally about 39 ft 6 in × 7 ft 9 in × 8 ft 10 in (12,032 × 2,352 × 2,698 mm), giving roughly 2,700 cubic feet.
One foot of height, outside and in. Same length, same width, same door width. The high cube gives 8 ft 10 in of internal height against 7 ft 10 in, and about 13 per cent more volume.
If anything has to stand up inside, or the container is being lined and floored, yes. A lined standard 40ft loses about four inches and starts to feel low. For pallets stacked one high, the standard is fine.
Tare weight varies by manufacturer and build year, so it is stated per unit rather than as a figure for the size. Ask about a specific container and we will give you its plated weight.
The same vehicle, but a foot more overhead clearance on the approach. Check gateways, branches and cables before ordering.
Same length, same width, same door width. The high cube is one foot taller outside and one foot taller inside, and its door aperture is taller to match. Volume goes from roughly 2,390 cubic feet to roughly 2,700.
Tare weight differs slightly between the two and varies by manufacturer, so it is stated per unit rather than as a figure for the size.
