Used 40ft Shipping Containers for Sale

The cheapest storage per cubic foot we sell, in graded used condition.

A 40ft container holds about 2,390 cubic feet and is the cheapest storage per cubic foot we sell. The catch is access: it normally arrives on a tilt-bed and needs 80 feet of straight-line approach to unload, a route at least 14 feet wide and 15 feet of overhead clearance.

Used stock is graded before it leaves. Expect a sound roof, working door seals and an intact floor, alongside dents, patch repairs and mismatched paint. Surface rust on weathering steel is normal and does not shorten the life of the container.

Who buys this combination

Used 40ft units go to buyers who have already decided on the size and are choosing on condition. If you are still weighing sizes, the size pages compare capacity and access side by side; if you are weighing grades, the condition pages explain what each one guarantees.

40ft dimensions

These are the ISO 668 figures for the size, which is why any container of this length stacks and locks with any other. Individual units vary in weight and finish.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 40ft cheaper than two 20ft containers?

To buy, yes, and it gives slightly more volume. To deliver, often not: two 20s are easier to place, can go in two locations, and on an awkward site the delivery saving can wipe out the difference in purchase price.

How much room do I need for a 40ft delivery?

A 40ft normally arrives on a tilt-bed and needs 80 feet of straight-line approach to unload, a route at least 14 feet wide and 15 feet of overhead clearance. This is the question that decides most 40ft purchases. A 50-foot turning radius and firm, level ground are the other two conditions that decide whether the delivery can go ahead.

What can I fit in a 40ft container?

About 2,390 cubic feet, or roughly twenty standard pallets on the floor. Internally 39 ft 6 in long with 7 ft 10 in of headroom.

Will a used 40ft sit level on soft ground?

Not for long. A 40ft loaded is a serious weight on four corners, and a settled corner racks the frame over a winter. Firm bearing points matter more here than on a 20ft.

Delivery

Delivery is quoted against the address and the access rather than the mileage, because what the truck can reach moves the price further than how far it travels. Give us the ZIP code and a description of the approach and we will confirm cost and timing.
