About this unit

A 40ft tunnel container in used condition — in service and structurally sound. Chosen for access from both ends. Every unit is inspected before it leaves our yard, so the grade below is what you will actually receive.

40ft Tunnel Container with Steel Shelving

This 40ft tunnel container is configured as a practical combination of secure storage and mobile workshop space. The doors at both ends allow the container to be accessed from either side, making it easier to move equipment through the unit instead of having to load everything through one end.

Integrated steel shelving adds another useful feature for workshop and storage applications. Tools, spare parts, maintenance supplies and smaller equipment can be kept organised along the walls, leaving more of the central floor area available for working and moving larger items.

Built around a heavy-duty steel container structure, the unit can be transported to a suitable site and used as a secure storage or workshop facility once positioned on an appropriate surface.

Key Features

Double doors at both ends: The tunnel layout creates access from either end and provides a continuous passage through the container when both sets of doors are open.

Integrated steel shelving: Built-in shelving provides dedicated storage for tools, components, parts, supplies and other smaller items, helping keep the main work area clear.

Protective lockboxes: Padlock protection housings help shield the locking points and provide additional security when the container is left unattended.

Passive ventilation: Built-in vents encourage airflow and can help reduce condensation inside the container.

Heavy-duty plywood flooring: Marine-grade plywood provides a durable working surface for foot traffic, equipment, tools and stored materials.

ISO corner castings: Standard container corner castings provide designated handling and securing points for compatible lifting and transportation equipment.

Why Choose a Tunnel Container?

The main advantage of a tunnel container is access. A conventional container normally has cargo doors at one end, which means everything entering or leaving the unit has to pass through the same opening.

With doors at both ends, this 40ft tunnel container can be approached from either direction. That can make a difference on a busy worksite where one side may be used for incoming materials while the other provides access to a different working area.

It can also work well when the container is positioned between two areas of a site. When both doors are open, equipment and materials can move through the container rather than being loaded from one side and carried back out the same way.

The tunnel configuration is not simply about convenience. For workshop and equipment-storage applications, being able to separate access points can make the available space easier to organize and use.

Detailed Description

The container is constructed around a heavy-duty weathering steel frame with corrugated steel walls designed for outdoor use. Its standard container structure provides a strong enclosed space while retaining the handling points required for compatible transport equipment.

Inside, integrated steel shelving provides storage along the walls. This is useful for keeping hand tools, power tools, spare parts, fasteners, maintenance supplies and other equipment organised and within reach.

The shelving also leaves the central floor area more open, which can be useful when the container is being used as a mobile workshop. The exact working area will depend on how the shelves are configured and the size of the equipment being stored.

Both sets of double cargo doors are fitted with locking hardware and protective padlock housings. Passive ventilation provides additional airflow, particularly when the container is closed for longer periods.

Specifications are nominal and may vary slightly between manufacturers and individual container builds.

Dimensions and Storage Capacity

The internal space is approximately 39 ft 6 in long × 7 ft 8 in wide × 7 ft 10 in high, providing around 2,390 cubic feet of internal volume before accounting for shelving or other internal equipment.

The dual-door arrangement provides access from both ends, which can be particularly useful when loading long items or moving equipment through the container. Actual clear space will depend on the shelving arrangement and anything else installed inside.

As with other shipping containers, quoted dimensions are approximate. Manufacturing tolerances and individual container specifications can result in small differences in measurements.

Where Can You Use a 40ft Tunnel Container?

Construction sites: Store tools, building materials, spare parts and site equipment while keeping frequently used items organised on the integrated shelving.

Industrial facilities: Add secure storage or workshop capacity for maintenance teams, production support and equipment storage.

Agricultural operations: Keep machinery parts, tools, maintenance supplies and other farm equipment in a dedicated enclosed space.

Remote worksites: Create a relocatable workshop or equipment store where permanent buildings are impractical or additional storage is needed.

Equipment maintenance: Use the container as a working area for suitable equipment and maintenance tasks where access from both ends improves movement around the unit.

Tool and parts storage: The integrated shelving makes the container particularly useful for organising smaller equipment and maintenance supplies instead of leaving everything on the floor.

Condition

This is a used container that has been in service. It is supplied as a structurally sound unit and is described as wind and watertight, with an intact roof, working door seals and no holes.

It is still a used container, however, so you should expect evidence of previous handling. Surface rust, dents, scratches, paint variations and previous owner markings can occur and are part of the normal appearance of a used unit. These cosmetic signs do not necessarily affect its suitability for storage or workshop use.

Every container is inspected before dispatch so the condition can be assessed before the unit leaves our yard.

Can It Be Converted Further?

Yes. The tunnel container can be further equipped for a specific workshop or storage application. Depending on the project, options may include electrical systems, LED lighting, insulation, windows, workbenches, additional shelving, ventilation or custom exterior paint.

If you already know how the container will be used, specifying modifications before delivery can be more straightforward than arranging the work after installation. Any structural modification should be properly planned around the existing container structure and intended use.

Shipping and Container Standards

If you intend to use the container for international cargo transport rather than static storage or a workshop, the applicable certification should be confirmed before purchase. The International Maritime Organization's Convention for Safe Containers provides the international framework for container safety requirements.

For information about container inspection practices and industry standards, the Institute of International Container Lessors is a useful industry reference. A used container intended for static storage should not automatically be assumed to have the certification required for an international voyage.

Delivery and Site Access

Delivery is quoted according to your site rather than offered at a single flat rate. The cost depends on the delivery distance, road approach, available placement area and whether a crane or other lifting equipment is required.

Most deliveries use a suitable tilt-bed or container-hauling truck. The access route should therefore be clear and reasonably level, with enough room for the vehicle to approach and unload safely.

Because this is a 40ft container, site planning is especially important. You should allow sufficient room not only for the container itself but also for the delivery vehicle and unloading operation. We confirm delivery requirements and pricing before you commit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a 40ft tunnel container?
A tunnel container is a shipping container with cargo doors at both ends. This creates a passage through the unit and allows equipment, materials and people to enter or exit from either direction.

What is the advantage of doors at both ends?
Dual-end access can make loading and unloading easier, particularly when the container sits between two working areas. It can also reduce the need to move everything back through the same doorway.

Does this container include shelving?
Yes. This unit is configured with integrated steel shelving designed to store tools, parts, supplies and other smaller items while keeping more of the central floor area available for working.

Can I use the tunnel container as a workshop?
Yes. Its dual access and integrated shelving make it well suited to workshop and maintenance applications. Electrical power, lighting, insulation and workbenches can also be considered for a more complete workshop fit-out.

Is the 40ft tunnel container new?
No. This is a used container that has been in service. It is structurally sound and wind and watertight, but normal signs of previous use such as dents, surface rust and paint wear may be present.

How much storage space does it provide?
The container has approximately 2,390 cubic feet of internal volume before accounting for shelving and other internal fittings.

Can vehicles drive through it?
The tunnel configuration provides a passage from one end to the other, but whether a particular vehicle can safely pass through depends on the vehicle's dimensions, the clear door opening and the internal layout. Check the actual measurements before planning vehicle access.

Can the container be moved to another site?
Yes. The standard container structure and ISO corner castings allow it to be handled with suitable container equipment. The receiving site must have appropriate access and a prepared placement area.

Can I add electrical power and lighting?
Yes. Electrical systems, lighting, insulation and other workshop features can be added where suitable. These requirements are best planned before the container is delivered.

Dimensions and capacity

Internal dimensions are approximately 39 ft 5 in × 7 ft 8 in × 7 ft 10 in (12,032 × 2,350 × 2,393 mm), giving 2,390 cu ft (67.7 m³) of usable space, with double doors at one end. These are the standard figures for a 40ft container; exact internals vary slightly by manufacturer.

Condition

This is a used container that has been in service. It is wind and watertight — no holes, working door seals, an intact roof — but it shows its history: surface rust, dents and previous owner markings are normal and do not affect how it performs.

What it is good for

This unit is commonly used for access from both ends. Doors, windows, insulation, electrics and paint can all be added before it ships — it is cheaper and neater to specify a conversion while the container is still in our yard than to modify it on your site afterwards.

Standards and inspection

Containers intended for international shipping carry a valid safety approval plate under the Convention for Safe Containers, administered by the International Maritime Organization. Condition grades such as cargo-worthy follow the inspection criteria published by the Institute of International Container Lessors. If you need a unit for shipping rather than static storage, tell us and we will confirm its plate before dispatch.

Delivery

Delivery is quoted against your site access rather than published as a flat rate, because haulage for a container depends on the distance, the approach and whether a crane is needed. Most deliveries use a tilt-bed truck, which needs a clear and reasonably level run about twice the container length. We price it before you commit.
