About this unit

A 500 gallon horizontal ASME propane tank, supplied either above ground or coated for burial with a riser and dome. Water capacity is 500 gallons and a full fill is 400 gallons of propane.

  • Approximately 9 ft 10 in long, 37.5 in diameter
  • Above-ground empty weight about 920 lb
  • Underground empty weight about 953 lb
  • Rated 250 psig
  • Built to ASME Section VIII, Division 1

The 33 lb difference between the two builds is the coating and the riser assembly, and it is the smallest part of the decision. What actually separates them is installation: an above-ground tank needs a level pad and clearance, while a buried one needs an excavation, careful backfill around the coating, and anchoring where the water table is high. The buried tank costs more to put in and is invisible once it is there.

Either way, where the tank may sit is decided by NFPA 58, which sets separation from buildings, boundaries and sources of ignition. The vessel itself is built under ASME Section VIII, Division 1.

If you have already decided, the dedicated listings are the above-ground 500 and the underground 500. Larger sites usually move to the 1,000 gallon tank. See the whole range on the propane tanks page.
